In financial services, ongoing training and development is really important. There are lots of courses and training available that can help you get your foot in the door and enable you to progress and change career direction.
Regulation and careers
Financial services is a regulated industry. The Financial Services Authority (FSA), which was set up by the Government, is responsible for making sure that financial organisations (banks and insurance companies for example) meet set standards so that the general population (that's me and you!):
- have confidence that the financial system is being managed properly
- understand how it operates so that we know what is happening to our money and
- are protected against any wrong doing by the industry
It's about ensuring that consumers achieve a fair deal. One of the ways that the FSA implements this is to require that people who work in financial services are appropriately trained and qualified. In terms of careers, being part of a regulated industry means that for some jobs a specific qualification is required before you are allowed to do the job unsupervised.
